If anyone's interested, I've just finished uploading my copy of the Workprint (400MB, MP4) onto Mega, so if you'd like the link, send me a PM!

Okay, so I've gotten the work print (thanks, voke!) and compared it to what my VHS refers to as the Special Edition. Guess what? They're the same. (Sort of.) Actually I pretty much knew that once I read rewak's post above; I recognized every one of the notes, which matched my own. However, even though it's the same edit (plus the end credits, which are different), the copy I've made is a lot better quality than the file that, presumably, is the one all of you have been trading around so far. Most importantly, it has the correct 4:3 aspect ratio, not 16:9. Below are comparisons of the three versions: (L-R) DVD, work print, and special edition. Note how much more you can see of each frame in the Special Edition version on the right. These are at 50% actual size, by the way; I didn't want to blow up the forum with full size ones. The sound quality, while not as good as the DVD, is still better than the currently circulating work print file. It is pretty damn big, though; even going on the advice I was given on here for settings, I still couldn't manage to get it any smaller than 1.01 GB without it looking terrible. But I think it will be worth the download if you like the work print and want a better copy. Send me a PM if you want the link. Meanwhile, the extra material that was on my tape (not bothering with Curse of the Blair Witch since that's on the DVD), the two Entertainment Tonight stories that aired shortly before the film premiered, can be found here: www.sendspace.com/file/5kcy5mThey're nothing special, but there is some nice footage of Dan talking about the movie that you may not have seen before. Thanks to everyone for their help in identifying this. I'm happy to share it with anyone who wants it.

wait, what version do you have. There's the workprint and the theatrical VHS/DVD release, is the only difference you have the aspect ratio?

The link I'm talking about sharing is the "Special Edition" version (the one on the right), which has the same edits as the work print (content-wise), but it's much better quality, plus it has the opening and closing credits. As you can see from the above screen shots, the correct aspect ratio means that you see a lot more than in the incorrectly cropped 16:9 file that's been going around. That one has the top and bottom of the screen chopped off, which is not how the movie was originally filmed or meant to be seen.

It's great that you've managed to identify the footage Trey. I'm all for a better quality workprint. I'm sending you a PM now.

Just watched it all. The video quality is pretty good. The audio is good. I hear their voices very well. The scratchy sound to the audio adds more of a "found footage under ruins" kind of feel. This Workprint version feels more complete than the final cut. Maybe we'll get the 2.5 hour Sundance version up here someday. I'll keep it.

Glad you like it. Funny how I found you guys because I was looking for a BETTER quality copy of what I had, then wound up uploading mine instead. But I'm happy to share with the group.
I wish I knew who it was I got it from back in 1999. What's odd is that I save nearly everything, emails and all, even that far back. But for whatever reason, that correspondence has been lost. Probably buried under a house somewhere...

Oh, and no one really answered your question in this thread about the long Sundance version. Well, it was said to be about 2:30 hours long. It was wittled down from about 20 hours of original footage!
Then, I believe, the Sundance version was wittled down even further to become the Workprint version of 1:22 (not counting end credits)
After that, they fine tuned the Workprint by taking out moments here and there, and then also adding in other moments instead to make it more of a "smoother" overall story for theatrical release, but without hardly changing the runtime much from the Workprint's runtime.
As far as I know, no one has ever come forward on this board with the Sundance version.
I will say this again: the Workprint feels more complete to me than the theatrical version, even without the man in the yellow cap explaining the story of children being made to stand in the corner, or the other very few moments that were added in later like, "I really wanna avoid any cheese".
The theatrical version really was missing a lot of wonderful little moments. Thanks again, and peace.

Twana, with talking to Ed a lot over the last few years, the Sundance print is in essence the workprint. So they're actually one in the same. Thats what i've gotten from him during a few conversations. From what i've been gathering the 2:30 version was not shown at Sundance and that may be well known. My 1999 Sundance booklet i think list BWP as 90 min or so and i can confirm that later if needed

Monro, in the Q&A panel just last year with Heather, Mike, and Josh, Heather said:
"The first time we saw the film was at the Manhattan Sundance and it was very long at that point, it was like over two hours (Mike chimes in "too long") and I was like: Oh god, I'm so annoying in this, shut up!"

Haxan screened a 2.5 hour cut of the film at the Enzian in FL in 1998. It was the first public screening of the film. It was on 2 beta sp tapes so there was a small break. The overall review was too long. They whittled it down to the 140 min cut shown at UCF in the summer of 98. I know that none of the cast was at the earlier screenings. I'll ask Mike when I talk to him this week as to the first time he saw the film and let you know.
