saw it a few weeks ago, during the midnight run in our fair city. i've been more excited about this movie than any other since the blair witch.
and i loved it. TBWP comparisons are there, but it's different, a much more straight-forward approach to a horror story. the fixed camera in the bedroom: genius. the building tension and dread: very well done. a few great scares. truly creepy moments
overall, a very subtle movie. i enjoyed the remade ending, though it was a bit hollywood. the original ending i've heard of would have been perhaps not so jump-inducing but far more horrific, deeply disturbing, which would change the whole tone of the film and maybe in a good way. but even so, i reallly liked the movie. i saw it with a great crowd. the theater sells booze, and horror fans drove in from as far as pittsburgh and indianapolis to see it.
what was lacking was the depth of the blair witch for all us kooky fans. the mythology, the breadth of the story that dan and ed built for us. but i highly recommend it. if you can see it with a horror crowd in an indy theater, all the better. i can envision the same backlash blair witch had in mainstream crowds, 'cause the gore ain't there.....

Oh yeah. This movie rocks. Go see it Is it on par with TBWP? No. But it's good enough. I fear I'll get into spoiler territory if I say too much. Let's just say that this film is a lesson in how NOT to deal with the supernatural. Play with fire, get burned. I'm wondering what the original ending was like...? They use sound a lot in this movie. You see little but imagine much. When it's done well, that's really cool. It works here. PA is in wide release now. Catch it when you can. So we can discuss it!

Anyone else catch the BW references in this film? I sure did. The bit at the end when Katie looks into the camera. Very much like Tristen's bit in BOS and also Heather's confessional. Micah was very Heather-like with the camera, always grabbing the camera before heading out to investigate the noises. The screaming in the last scene brought back memories of the BW finale in the basement. Even the title card at the beginning was similar to the beginning of BWP. And they used the actor's names as the character names. Sound familiar? This director borrowed quite a bit from BW. I wish the ending wasn't so... Hollywood. Seeing the demon face at the end just felt cheesy.

Anyone else think it strange that there are no credits at the end? There's one screen, then two or three minutes of a black screen and silence. That's it. The lights didn't come up right away at my theater so I sat there until they did. Part of me thought there might be something to see, part didn't want to crack my skull open stumbling around in near darkness...

I agree, this movie Rocks1. I saw it last week and a few days later, I had a dream I was dragged out of my bed. Th main comparison to the BWP is you never see the demon.

Yeah, just saw the original screener....I really liked it. I thought the pacing was fine. I assume they didn't have the budget yet..so, the effects I saw were really good for 11 grand( what little effects they used). I still wanna go and see the theater version. I heard the scenes are rearanged to more of a dramatic effect. We'll see I guess.

I just found the screener you were talking about. Watching it now.
That version has the original ending and runs a bit longer.

Looks like they really are using the BW/Artisan playbook. Crappy sequel plans and all. Don't do it, Paramount! You'll be sorry... Number one movie this week, by the way. That should show Lionsgate that there's still an audience for this sort of stuff, eh?

I finally found somewhere, where this was playing. I thought it was awesome! One of the better horror movies as of late. I highly recommend everyone see it. I agree that the demon face was cheesy and didn't fit with the rest of the movie. I think they should have left it out and ended with Katie standing there for a moment after Micah is thrown. She then just walking out the door and it fades to black. I also thought it was weird that there were no credits. I was also waiting for the credits to roll or something more to happen as the lights didn't come on right away.

I wanted something really bad to happen to that "psychic". He seemed like a fake to me. His advice was stinky. How do they know the demon would have followed them? Because he said so? Nah. I'd have left the house anyway. It would have taken time for the beastie to find them again, right? At least they would get a break from it all. I wanted the demon to grab him as he was leaving and slam the door on his head a few times.

Just watched the screener last night and actually was pretty impressed. I thought all the hype would have been, well just hype you know lol. But I was pretty freaked out watching it and then when I went to bed I realised I was 'really' freaked out haha!
I watched the screener so got the original ending. So I'm wondering is the new release different, is it worth watching if I have already seen the screener?

The theatrical version ends differently. And there are two added scenes that are not in the screener. Part of the ending is shown in the trailer, the part where you see someone being thrown into the camera. One added scene involves Katie's keys being found on the kitchen floor after the first night (they were on the counter earlier). The other one is a daytime scene on the last day where the photo of the couple hanging in the upstairs hallway is smashed and the guy's picture has scratch marks across it. I think part of that is in the trailer too.

Ah I see. Thank you. I might try to find a clip of the ending then, but I'm mostly finding parody's of it lol. I will probably just find the scenes online or wait for the dvd then =]

Even better! Looking forward to seeing it again. It genuinely freaked me out, especially that night lol. Not as much as The Blair Witch Project did in fairness, which has been the only film I couldn't sleep afterwards to this day!

Having seen all 3 endings now, I think I prefer the screener ending (with the police shooting Katie as she comes at them with the knife). The suicide ending (on the dvd as an alternate ending) doesn't work for me. I see why they didn't use that one. I have no clue how they would make a sequel to this. I hope they don't.
