Let's limit this to theatrical viewings. I know many saw it at home for the first time. Not the same experience. I'll go first. Sadly I didn't save my ticket stub from the first viewing. Still kicking myself for that one. But it was in July 1999 when it was still in limited release. I went to Memphis, TN to see it at the Malco Majestic theater. About 90 miles from where I live. The website had me hooked. I HAD to see this thing. Once it was showing locally I went back several more times. And so it began 😀

Did you think the movie was real when you first saw it in the theater?

Did you think the movie was real when you first saw it in the theater? We didn't think it was real but we seen it on DVD and not at the movies.

For me, it was a Friday night, 7/30/1999 in Augusta, GA, where I grew up. Regal Cinemas, I believe. I knew it wasn't real; the first time I'd heard of it was someone on a message board asking if it was, and someone else responded and explained how it was made. But I still really got into the website and promotional stuff and thought it was brilliant. I saw it with two friends of mine, and what was annoying was how loud and obnoxious everyone in the theater was. All three times that I saw it that year, that happened. I think it was because everybody, particularly the ones who still thought that it was real, was very nervous and scared, then joking around to combat that. But even knowing it was fake didn't stop us from feeling pretty freaked out by the end. As we left the theater, one of my friends said, "Well, I guess I'm going to go home and try to sleep tonight!"

Did you think the movie was real when you first saw it in the theater? No. I probably knew way too much about it going in. Didn't diminish my enjoyment any though.

I'm one of those rare people that don't care about spoilers. My brother saw the movie before I did and pretty told me everything. I went and saw it at the theater and was still affected by it. My memory of,not only my theater experience, but also of that entire summer will always stick with me. In 1999,like a lot of people,I was obsessed with the Blair witch project.

I feel bad for people who never saw this in a theater. Your first viewing should be on the big screen with an audience. It loses something otherwise. I'm curious what modern audiences think of this film.
