Hi all I am new to the forum and I wanted to ask if and how did The Blair Witch Project when you first saw it. The movie is a firm favorite of mine and I will admit that it did spook me the first time and even now it creeps me out a bit. Although I will tell you about my twin sister's experiences after watching the film and see what you all think.
We were both big horror fans growing up and with all the hype of the movie coming out we were first in line to see it on the day it was released in 1999. We were both 25 at the time the film came out. As I said I really liked the movie but my sister, Sarah hated it. We met some friends and our other halves (who aren't horror fans) after the film and all she spoke about was how awful it was. The next day Sarah's partner and now husband, Dan phoned to say that she had had almost a night terror type thing during the night and she was pretty shaken up so my wife Danni and I went to see her and she was really badly shaken. Dan said he had to restrain her to stop her injuring herself while she was having the nightmare/terror.
Sarah refused to tell us what she had experienced but all she said at the time was it was about the Blair Witch. She spent a long time after struggling to sleep and although she never had the nightmare again she still struggled when it came to trying to sleep. Eventually after about eight months she got back to normal and it was something we almost forgot about. She had a bit of a wobble in 2016 when the new Blair Witch came out when we are at the cinema seeing something else and the trailer was shown. She was sitting next to my daughter at the time and she said after she thought Sarah was going to break her hand because she grabbed hold of it so tight.
Last Christmas we had Sarah, Dan and her son and daughter visit and all the kids decided to have a horror night and they put on The Blair Witch Project and Sarah had nothing to do with it and moved to a different room of the house. Afterwards after a few drinks we asked her about it and she still refused to say what her nightmare was about but did it "it was to do with that house at the end" We are still none the wiser about what her nightmare was about and I don't think I ever will.
Were you or anyone you know affected that badly by The Blair Witch Project? Sorry that was a long message I sent there!

Welcome It didn't have that sort of effect on me, though it has stayed with me 20+ years. I heard of people getting motion sickness from the shaky cam. But nothing like you described. I found the film creepy and cool, and my thoughts dwelled on it long after leaving the theater. No movie ever grabbed me that way, before or since.

I slept with the lights on for a couple of nights. I lived alone in the woods at the time, so even though I knew it was just a movie, I was having none of it.

This movie, the website that accompanied, and Curse affected my love of horror greatly. In a time where jump scared we’re becoming a thing, I found this atmospheric horror film a bit unnerving. Though my basement at my old house resembled nothing of that found in film, I still was terrified (at times) to even go into it. That stopped so many years later.
It stand as the major criteria to make a successful film with me. If you can scare me, you’re in. And this movie delivers. It still, and shall, stand as one of my all time favorite horror films.

I mean, the website's okay...I guess...hehehe... Less the site itself, more the usage of “The Cellar” Disclaimer: I've known Dan since before he built the website. The tearsheet from Variety in August 1999 celebrating 40 million hits is the only piece of archival material from production and release--which, let us be clear, takes up an entire room in his house--that he's saved that celebrates himself. Everything else in the room celebrates everyone else who worked on the film. He's terribly self-effacing about it, but make no mistake. That website is a gem. It changed motion picture marketing forever. He won't toot his own horn, but I'll blast it so loud mallards will drop from the ceiling.

He was successful in making a 12-13 year old nearly piss himself scared. The site is, of itself, a gem. Mainly where I learned much of the lore that, has since, expanded.

Hahaha, gator, I actually didn't see Curse until several months after the film, so it was more of an archaeological or sociological phenomenon for me. Pretty sure it would have scared the crap out of me if I had seen it first.

My apologies, it wasn't clear to me from your post. I saw Curse on VHS as well, since I didn't have cable, nor did the person who screened it for me.

I saw bits of the program when TBWP was coming out so I don’t think I had immersed myself in much of the lore until after I had received the original on VHS. After that, I purchased it (Curse) from my then-local Hollywood Video. I’ve since read the Dossier and, in all honesty, I feel that Curse only managed to scratch the surface

I've done the same! I've actually not read the dossier--I've been more immersed in the production end of it than the narrative end of it (including, if you will, the production end of the narrative) because of both the way I came to knowing about it and simply my wiring as a human (I majored in stage management and theater design at university, so I'm always interested in the production aspect of stuff.) It's possible that I *should* read it at some point, I just....haven't. All that said, Curse did a hell of a job in the space it was given, and taking into account when it came out. Ben and Mike Monello created an incredible world that gave us more questions than answers, and I love that about it.

Agreed, and I feel you in your love of production-end, I’m much of the same, as someone wanting to get into filmmaking. The dossier works well with the film, Curse, etc. it comes highly recommended if you manage to find it

The dossier is really good. Adds more layers to what is already a great story. Like many I consumed the finished product first, then looked into how the sausage was made. Turns out I could have just waited for Matt's book. C'est la vie

First time I watched it I instantly fell in love with the film. It really affected my vision as a filmmaker. And I've been obsessed with horror/found footage ever since. It's one of only two movies where I literally gasped (The other being Pulp Fiction: The moment you realize Vincent and Jules are walking into the same diner as shown in the beginning) I watch it once a year on Halloween night.

Probably not. I have mostly done small local stuff. However, I'm hoping to shoot a found footage movie about the Tennessee Bell Witch next year. So super pumped for that!

Thanks! And you are 100% correct. All other attempts have fallen short so fingers crossed! I'll be sure to post a link to the film when it's done.
