if they do honestly i doubt it'd look the way it should. its meant to look gritty, unrefined by nature. I'd buy it because its in my dna to but i'm not sure it'd ever be "restored" for a new format for some time.

I'm with Monrozombi. Not only is it probably not possible, it's not even desirable.

i know that but i feel like they could go to the original film elements to make a proper restoration like the blu ray is kinda cropped without the round edges. The Video footage will surely still look bad but imo the 16mm footage could benefit of the higher resolution and maybe even give the chance of doing that extended cut for the 20th anniversary . My Panasonic has a firmware error that adds dolby vision to every movie on netflix lol and it makes the Blair Witch Project look alot better. Sorry for my kinda strange english. cheers

I didn't notice anything "strange" about your English at all! You're quite fluent.

To me, i think Blair looks best on VHS since the way it was shot it has a different feel and look to me, and thats just me. I feel watching the film as close to the way it was shot is the best to experience. Too much spit and polish, to me, takes away from a part of the film that makes the film special. Who knows what we will get Lionsgate

"Found footage" shouldn't look pristine. That's sorta the point.

Monrozombi said it better than I could have. For me, the analogy is jazz. Old school, twenties and thirties jazz. The kind that's SUPPOSED to sound crackly because it's on vinyl, and not just any vinyl but old 78s that have been in your grandfather's hallway closet for years.
This film is like that. It's like your grandfather's old jazz collection. It's supposed to be grainy and weird and imperfect. They're film students. Stuff is supposed to be out of focus because Josh fucked up and was using meters instead of feet. We're supposed to be looking up Heather's nose because she's scared to death and filming quietly to not wake Mike up and wasn't paying attention to the frame (either the character or the actor). It's supposed to be jumpy and shaky and filled with snot and imperfections. That's what makes it perfect--the imperfections.

"Found footage" shouldn't look pristine. That's sorta the point. I don't think 4K is always about being pristine (look at the Dark Crystal 4K transfer), it's about getting as close to the film print version of the film as possible. And that'll look better even with shaky and blurry footage.

I've talked to him quite a few times about it and he still feels that VHS is the closest the film looks to how it was shot. Shot on Hi-8 & 16mm the film was transferred to digiBeta, put into the computer, edited, then transfered back to digiBeta and then to 35mm. That process changes the way the film is presented so there is a slightly different look. I always joke with Gregg Hale that he somewhere has a box of the digiBeta tapes so that I could see the film on a first generation dub (the hi-8 tapes are long gone)

So I guess the only way a 4K Blair Witch could exist then is taking a scan of the 35mm? That would still be worth it in my opinion. After watching TBWP in 35mm in an arthouse theater, I feel like the dvd and bluray releases pale in comparison. There's something about watching it on film that enhances the experience for me. And now with 4K, we have the technology to replicate that feel and look much more closely into digital. Would you say that the 35mm or the VHS is better?

digiBeta is the version I'd like to see. Without the conversion to film. But it would be expensive and Lionsgate would never do it.

From what I read here it already exists. So what do you mean exactly?
Are you wanting the digibeta copy released on Blu-ray?

Are you wanting the digibeta copy released on Blu-ray? Exactly. That would be the closest thing to the raw footage. A 2k blu sourced from the edited digiBeta (4k would be wasted on this). Before the conversion to 35mm. The dvd and blu are sourced from the 35mm version. In theory the video quality should be better.

That sounds awesome. But it should be a never before seen extended cut for the 25th anniversary.
