"By earth and water and fire and smoke, Persephone I invoke"
-- okay wait .... smoke isn't even one of the five elements that the Wiccan pentacle signifies. The other two are air and spirit, there is no smoke element, except as a part of the fire element I suppose. . .
I've been reading up on Wicca and its "father", Gerald Gardner, a British guy who was obsessed with folklore and the occult. He made it all up starting in 1949 at age 64, only 15 years before his own death! he even stole all his ideas from other existing sources to compose his own collection of ritual instructions and spells which he later called the Book of Shadows, after getting the idea for the name from a magazine article he'd noticed. Before that he called it The Book of the Art Magic. He claimed that he'd been brought into the fold of the New Forest Coven in Southern England in 1939 - a small and last surviving coven of an ancient Witch-Cult. He then decided that it was nearly gone and therefor needed a revival, so he called it "Wicca", meaning "witch". He had a heart attack while travelling alone on a ship in 1964 and was buried at a port on the Tunisia coastline, and then later exhumed and moved to the country's capitol city, Tunis, by his former High Priestess. And people still believe in his religion because people believe what they want to. Period. . . .
I also read about the Goddess Persephone. She is of Greek mythology, the wife of Hades, and is therefor the Goddess of the Underworld. She brings balance which is why the earth has different seasons. Perhaps that's why Erica was praying to her - to bring balance to an extremely unstable situation ..... I wonder if Erica knew anything about good ol' Gerald. . anyhoo, it was all very interesting to read about.
