There are very few movies that are more enjoyable on VHS. The Blair Witch Project is one of them, because of the source materials. It looks exactly as it should because a majority of the movie was shot on 8mm tape. The Bluray edition of Blair was poor to me. The original framing is cut out because someone upscaled and cropped the image. The alternate endings, however, have the original look of the 8mm before being transferred to film and the rounded frame.
To get what I'm talking about, compare the footage from the official VHS or DVD release to the footage used in Curse of the Blair Witch.
Night of the Living Dead is perfect for me on a grimy VHS copy. One with poor tracking quality.

yeah, the DVD picture is square, the way me likes it to be. hey, he just turned 20, how nostalgic about VHS could he really be? after all, DVDs came out when he was 4. I remember being so happy when DVDs came out in '97.

I understand why people would prefer the VHS over the DVD, for nostalgic reasons and whatnot, but surely the DVD version is superior content/quality wise?

VHS is becoming retro and is creeping back on us..
Just watch the prices (especially of 80s horror) start to rocket in the next couple of years..
I still like to watch the odd tape or two...
Have never seen Blair Witch on VHS though..
Maybe I should invest??

There was (or is) a BW special collector's edition on ebay for about £9.. Going off the details on the photo, it apparently comes with a book.. Anyone familiar with this VHS edition?

It sounds like it might come with the Dossier, which can be bought for about £3/4 off eBay aswell. A really interesting read if you haven't got it already.

It does take a while to get through, but it's pretty darn interesting!
The timelines in there are great.

I understand why people would prefer the VHS over the DVD, for nostalgic reasons and whatnot, but surely the DVD version is superior content/quality wise? Yeah, but not by much. Most of it is 8mm cassette tape, the rest is 16mm black & white film stock, all transferred to 35mm film. To get the closest to what the film should and would look like, VHS is the way to go. After all, the footage was supposedly found in a duffel bag in the dirt. Nostalgia has nothing to do with it. It's simply not supposed to look polished.

You're totally right Woll. It all adds to the experience I guess!

No, it must be projected onto a dirty white sheet hung on a wall from an old fashioned projector to be viewed in its truest form.

What if we don't have an old fashioned projector? ...

Nothing beats the LaserDisc version of The Blair Witch Project. It looks and feels the most true to the original that I saw in the theatre back in 1999. The VHS tape is too blurred and not high enough in resolution and the DVD/BluRay versions are too compressed to look like the real deal.
