I'm new here. i'm a horror and scifi fan. and this movie is amoung top 5 fav horror of all time. It's really hard to explain how i felt when i first saw this movie, back in November 1999, the fear was on a totaly new level. TBWP , more or less, started a trend in horror, new kind of realism. For years i forgotten how this effected me on, untill i've seen "Quaratine", which in a way was "Blair Witch" meets "28 Days Later", and while i was watching it i started to get this familier fear i hadnt felt since i first saw...TBWP. (BTW, i also saw "Cloverfield" too, and i did have an inkling of that same fear, but it wasnt the same, in fact as far as that fear is from 1-3: 1) "The Blair Witch Project" 2) "Quarantine"
3) [further removed] "Cloverfield".
I have mixed feelings about documentry style horror. To me it's a whole other genre than regular horror, a genre that TBWP didnt really start, but put it on the map. I remember hearing about "Cannibal Holocaust" being the first, and there mightve been a couple others before TBWP. But TBWP popularized it, that was the beggining of a new kind of realism in horror. but i will say this documentry style horror has the same look and feel as a snuff film, I think thats where the fear comes from.
I found some insightful views on documentery style horror and reality TV. and i've even written a post on another board on the subject and why i believe horror films of today has gotten so realistic that nowadays you probely couldnt tell the differance between the real thing (snuff) and a movie that's "just a movie".
