Villagers in tribal central India have allegedly beaten 50 women with sticks and cut off their hair after accusing them of witchcraft.
A spiritual man told the villagers the assaults would protect them from evil spirits, police said.
The alleged attacks happened at a forest in a poor district of Chhattisgarh state, 250 miles from the capital Raipur.
Dozens of women are killed every year on suspicion of being witches or witch doctors in India.
Superstition is widespread, especially in rural areas that lack an effective schooling system.
While there are few killings in Chhattisgarh, more than 100 women are tortured, paraded naked or harassed in the state annually, officials said.
"Police have begun a probe and interrogated dozens of villagers who hosted a nine-day purification ceremony," Radheshyam Nayak, a senior state police officer said.

Hey Tweek, how are you!! It's been a long time since I dropped by! I thought of you today, don't ask me why. Just wanted to see how everything was going and by the looks of things, it looks like thing's are going well. Can you believe how time flies!! About your story, it's really sad that something this bizarre is still happening today. Reminds me of that sad case a couple of months ago where a man shot to death his two young daughters because they were dishonering his religion and culture by dating. What goes through the minds of these people? Thank god we live in a free society, yet we need to be so vigilant of everything around us. I turn on Nancy Grace today and yet another child abduction...no not Haleigh, now it's Amber and I don't mean "amber alert", her name is actually Amber. sigh

I think she may have finally forgotten you now..
That occurence was just that society's excuse for torturing women. A misogynist society.
They don't believe they were all evil witches.
