Why did u guys decide to create a fictional history of Burkittsville as Blair instead of inserting the story of elly into the real history of the early town?

Burkittsville came onto the scene after the whole myth had already been built. Dan and Ed chose B-Ville because it had the right look. At that point, we'd already put a lot of development time into the "Blair Witch."
If memory serves, Dan and Ed chose B-Ville right before the shoot.
I suppose it was easier than renaming it, and it rolls of the tongue better than "Burkittsville Witch."

The fact that the town had been renamed gave the thing a really eerie twist and I am surprised that it was not planned that way. Good fortune and blessings.
