I know I should have wrote this attached to another thread, but being that this is the first time since 1999 that July 30th fell on a Friday, I felt this was a special birthday.
I remember everything about July 30, 1999.
Went in to work super early, got home, took a power nap and had tickets to the 9PM showing of The Blair Witch Project. For the past two weeks or so, the internet (in its infancy) had lured me into the Blair Witch site a few times to look at the "evidence", mythology and those glorious 30-second clips. My AOL account was dialing up a lot to check all the goodies out.
Being from Maryland, I was taken aback, thinking I missed something. I've lived here my whole life and never knew about this legend? I actually thought it was awesome that it was possibly true. But after digging around, and talking with friends, it was revealed that it was all made up...wow. Even MORE awesome. Drove off to see it at a small, now-closed, theatre in Glen Burnie, my friend James and I were pumped for what was in store.
Around 85 minutes later...
My arm and neck hairs are standing because of Heather's shrieking as she watched Mike stand in the corner.
Credits roll...
The audience is mostly silent except for a few notable people practically yelling at the screen, "What the fuck?!!" The powerful divisiveness that still lingers today: What a piece of crap faction, and then the one I fell into: Holy shit that was scary. I couldn't stop smiling leaving the theatre because of the thrill. Walking through the parking garage and all its cars, I immediately thought of a terrifying prank to play on someone. Imagine if you just saw the movie, walked trembling back to your car, and you saw, waiting for you, was a pile of rocks. I would've crapped my pants!
I never played that joke on anyone, but I sure as hell managed to use it during a scene in "Legends of Burkittsville".
When I got home, I was still thinking about it...I couldn't think of a more horrific scenario to be in: you walk all day and wind up in the same place. Or being alone in the dark and hear those sounds bouncing around you. Or coming out of your tent to see that someone or something was on to you by leaving things for you as you wake up. I was hooked.
And this film is apart the 1999 lineup, widely considered the greatest year in the history of cinema. (Google the movies that came out, you won't be disappointed) I was still head over heels for Episode I that came out in May (yes I loved it then and still do), and was all set for the movie that was coming out the next Friday: The Sixth Sense.
Can't believe it's been 22 years.
