New here, I just wanted to share my input in the film. Just recently I watched the film again the other week and felt like I was missing something. I decided to wear headphones and felt like I was watching a completely different film. I believe we can all agree the night segments are the most eerie of the film. I discovered that I was missing out a big part of the film that carries it forward. I never noticed the snapping of branches / trees or the sounds of children laughing because they were pretty faint (at least for my tv). The screams of Josh from the darkness was more agonising to hear. I never noticed other sounds from the house. What really made me lose my mind was the ending credits theme. Sounded like something out of the first Silent Hill game.
I very much understand what made this film scary, the sound design played a big part of it. From what I remember during the movie commentary they said they played the sounds from a boom box and had Josh scream into a mic. To their surprise the cameras caught the sounds perfectly without needing to add them in later.
Keep in mind, I love horror. It takes a lot to scare me. I'm like a rock. If something scares me or creeps me out then that's a very good complement. I'd love to use a time machine to 1999 when this first came out.

I agree. The sound is well done. Did you notice the wind sound in a couple of places? At the rock cemetery and at the top level of the house. You could hear it in the theater (back in '99). Nice touches.
