Alright, so I will admit to being clueless to some obvious things relating to this film. But now I think I've figured most everything out.
Politely correct me if I'm wrong,
It is my current understanding the backpack and it's contents were planted in the foundation of an old house--that being of Rustin Parr. The bag contained a copy of the film, and other things. Then it was found, and people actually thought it was real. There were even actors pretending to be the parents. Four years later on the movies release, the directors brought the movie to Sunndance and we all know what happened from there.
SO WERE THERE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY CONTACTED THE AUTHORITIES?!!! I'm wracking my brain here.

But, there was no bag? But there were photos and stuff. But surely Dan and Ed didn't do all that stuff by themselves? Or did they do all the work to create pandemonium--after the release. Alright, no, I think I'm beating around the bush. Did anyone who wasn't Haxan films know about the "disapearence of the three independent film makers" before the film's release? If I sound like I'm a bit dim-witted about all of this. . . I was only nine or ten when it came out, I didn't watch the news, no I take it back, I just dismissed most of it. All the Blair Witch literature, except for two or three books on this site, and documentaries, all said that the film was real or had "only a small chance it was a hoax."

Oh no, I made a booboo.
Not Ed and Dan, I think I meant Ben, Neil, and ummm umm. The other guy that I can't remember. Oh yeah, MIKE,
They were responsible for all the post-pandemonium?!

All of it is fake & was basically a hoax. Everyone involved with the movie made everything up to go along with the story. Including videos, photo's, evidence, props, stories, interviews, etc.
This was done before the film was released to make everyone believe, while I imagine some stuff was done after the release, for example the books released, sticks & stone/Burkittsville 7 VHS, etc.
There were no real missing independant filmmakers. The story was completely made up for the movie.

I knew that the story was fake, and things of that nature.
I was just wondering if there were any real police investigations. But I think I understand it now. It was probably one of those situations where you had to actually be there, right?

No there were no real police investigations. The only police investigations are the fake ones put together by the crew. Well as far as I know.

Definitely. I think that's basically what made the movie as much money as it made. And it being an awesome scary story, but it being believed that it was real made everyone very interested in seeing it & made the movie even scarier.

It's the CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST effect. A movie so frightening, filmed with the proper equipment in a documentary format can cause a hysteria so powerful the human mind dismisses it as true. Ruggero Deodato almost faced murder charges because of it's realism until he voided the actors contracts by telling one of the actors to gather the other three in order to avoid prison. The same thing happened with this film, it's so scary with an actual realistic appearance to it caused people to believe it was in fact true.

Yeah. I'm just messin' with ya. It's all fiction. There is a town called Burkittsville in Maryland. That part's true. But nothing else.

"Wreslting's not FAKE!"
...er..um...I mean yeah it is an entirely fictitious mythos...one thing is for sure though...many batteries were killed in the making of this movie.
