I'm really suprised Sanchez now wants to go with 'what happened next', since according to articles and interviews, that was exactly what they never wanted to do, instead they'd wanted to take the franchise down the historical prequel route, similar to Robert Eggers' later-film The Witch, but were refused by Lionsgate:
