Some have asked my thoughts on the film. Yes, I was part of the LG team, having worked the online campaign and website, but not the production itself. Neither had Ed or Dan. They were signed on as EPs, but same as BoS, that was for credibility. They had the script from the start though, 'just not involved in the actual production. I myself did NOT have the script originally. And what's even more bizarre was the NDA I signed for it. I've signed many NDAs over the years, usually only for studio films, indies don't necessarily need one. And when I do, they're usually a one-page document that says if I speak of the film before it expires, they can sue me.
In regards to BW16, my NDA was several pages long, as the "Woods Movie" as it was originally marketed. And it wasn't a case if I spoke of the film, or reveal it's actually Blair Witch 16, they would not only sue me, they would take my first born, and if I didn't have a child, they would extract the sperm from me using an ice pick, impregnate a crackwhore, take her full term, then disembowel her in front of me and eat the child alive and raw in my presence while being submerged in a 50-gallon drum wrapped in piano wire, with Kenny G on speakers outside of it looping at high decibels.
In other words, LG wasn't fucking around.
No, I didn't like the film. My biggest criticism is the complete absence of character development. I didn't like the script either. But without character development, you have nothing. One of the (many) things that made TBWP work is that by default it is mostly character development. In its 81 minutes, 75% is spent developing Heather, Mike and Josh's characters, and it was done naturally and organically. In that time we get so familiar with their individual personalities, we identify with their reactions and responses, to each other and to their environment, by the time the shit is hitting the fan, without knowing it we've become the 4th camper.
...the one that lived.
There is nothing even close to that in BW16. Within the first few minutes they're killing off characters in a most Hollywood cliche manner, and we couldn't give a shit. There's no empathy, we don't know who they are.
We don't even know their names. We have to be reminded in the end credit roll.
There's a LOT more I didn't like about the film, but I can't discuss it here. Not just for the sake of LG, but of relationships I have with certain folks who shall remain nameless :-)
