So I got the Blu Ray today seeing the movie for the first time again after 2 years since watching it when it first came out. I didn't take any notes while viewing and took a break before watching the movie so Im going off memory. None in any specific order because Im going off memory. I've checked the threads to see if anybody touched upon these in detail or made a list of BTS stuff so I thought of sharing.
The "Thing"
The monster(?) wasn't CG but a costume. Most of the movie was practical. Only thing they did was erase cables and other equipment. They unfortunately didn't show any costume in the BTS footage (little suspicious). The "Blair Witch Arm" credit is wrong as stated in the commentary. Likely the monster was the only threat. Their intention was to never show a "witch" but said if you wanted to receive it as a witch then it's up to you as the viewer. There seems to have been some confusion about if it was the witch or not among the people who worked on the sound design.
Jump Scares, Sound Design, and Video Glitches
Adam and Simon have said in the commentary they LOVE jump scares. They went all out to a point they believe nobody will want to let them do jump scares again which is why the sound design is pretty awful. The reasoning behind the glitches is they want to simulate file corruption and equipment damage.
The Drone
Apparently many drones were harmed during the making of the film. A lot of them broke and used a GoPro to make the drone crashing. They lost 1 GoPro the first time they tried to make the crash. Its apparently still out there. In British Colombia, Canada. They didn't film in the United States but tent reshoots.
Whats in her leg?
Just a root. No mystery or anything supernatural. It was just a root. No CG for that part ether. If they made a mistake they could just insert it back in easily.
Falling Tree
The scene where you see a tree fall on Peter was real. They dropped a tree on his stunt double.
The House
There were 3 set pieces made for the house. One for the tunnel going tot he basement, one for two floors going up, and one for the attic. As you know, the original house was torn down because the farmer that owned the land at the time got sick and tired of fans going there. They used many fan photos who went at the time before they tore it down as reference and the directors of the original film helped them out with the design. They made the new house look as close as they could but make it original with having the intention that probably the house looks different every time someone goes inside. Everything was torn down after they finished filming the ending. People were waiting to tear it down as they were filming the last scene we see.
Heather
In the commentary they confirmed it was Heather. The screaming you hear is apparently voice clips Simon's girlfriend recorded. The reflection in the mirror was at an angle where you can see her hiding somewhere. We dont get to see the actress or what the costume used in the BTS ether.
The Tunnel
The tunnel goes on for 50ft. Its fake and actors are able to get out if they're experiencing anxiety. They filmed the scene about 7 times. Lisa's actress wasn't the only one in there. Her stunt double and a camera operator were kinda sandwiched in there with Lisa's actress being in the very middle. The part where she gets stuck was her stunt double holding onto her legs so she wont move forward. At one point the camera operator mistook her acting for being genuinely freaking out. The camera operator eventually got very claustrophobic that they had to switch him out for another one.
Im sure Im missing one or two things. I feel like Im forgetting at least something but I cant remember because Im going off memory. At least I have remembered the big things that left an impression on me as I watched the BTS and listened to the commentary. I did find it a little odd how they said along the lines of "If you're still listening thank you and sorry we wont be making any sequels to explain any of this crap because you probably didn't show up opening weekend."
Well jokes on you, there's a TV series in the works with the original directors!
