In BW2, Erica states she is a Wiccan, and that she believes in Nature.
Wicca is a nature-based religion, it is dynamic and logical, loving and responsible, sensuous and holy. Wiccans believe in a Goddess as well as a God, and do spells and rituals and meditations to help themselves heal and positive change.
Satanism is about looking inside yourself for the answers as opposed to looking outward. It's about being your own god. It's living your life and loving it. It's about indulgence with responsibility. It's self-empowerment. [The Satanic Bible page 47]
Both religions celebrate man and nature as they really are: Carnal.
I found it interesting that the Ritual used in the movie was based on the practices of Anton LaVey.
In the ritual, Erica was the nude altar.
In Satanism, a Living Altar, is a nude woman who sits or lies draped across the large stone mantle (trapezoidal shape, 3 to 4 feet high and 5 ½ to 6 feet long can be specially constructed for the woman to lie upon), flesh gleaming in the dim light, knee bent modestly, hair flowing over the edge of the mantle (if lying down), or sitting with (long) hair covering breasts, and perhaps something near their nether-regions ... a living altar of flesh, evoking lust and making the blood burn, becoming the point of concentration for all in the room, the carnal focus of the will of all participants.
In Satanism there are three main types of rituals, Compassion (for oneself and others), Lust (to release unrequited sexual urges) and Destruction (to cleanse oneself of anger towards someone who has done you an injustice).
In watching the ritual in BW2, it consists of all of the three types of rituals in Satanism ...
The Compassion ritual (for oneself and others) - the group allowing themselves to indulge in their fantasies, the prologue to the ritual.
Erica: "Two guys and a girl, sleeping in the same tent night after night, and no sex? It makes no sense."
Kim: "You're so right."
Erica: "I mean, they were scared out of their minds, and the greatest stress relieve right at their fingertips ... and nothing.
Jeff: "I'm a little frustrated."
The Lust ritual (to release unrequited sexual urges) - the group taking off their clothes, Jeff kissing Kim, Stephen fondling Eria, Erica and Kim kissing, Jeff and Kim have sex, and Stephen and Erica have sex in doggy-style.
The Destruction ritual (to cleanse oneself of anger towards someone who has done you an injustice) - the murders at Coffin Rock of the other Tour group, the Blair Witch-Hunt.
Jeff: "What are you guys doing here?"
Tour Guide: "We've got a tour group, the Blair Witch Walk. What's your excuse?"
Jeff: "Tour group, the Blair Witch-Hunt."
