Not so much as a theory right now as a random thought: Has there been official confirmation that James is Heather's brother? It's not mentioned in the trailer or official synopsis, and while it seems like a natural conclusion, I was curious if we had any official word from the people involved in the film that this is the case. Because it could be an interesting twist if it turned out we were dealing with a crew with no actual connection to Heather & friends. But is there confirmation that there is indeed a family bond here?

Well, he says in the trailer "I think that might be my sister" ..
Also, the girl Lisa says "do you think she could still be out here after all these years?"
From the EW article Tweek posted:
"the found footage movie stars James Allen McCune (Showtime’s Shameless) as the brother of Heather Donahue’s character from the original 1999 horror film, who sets out to discover what happened to his long-missing sister"
The official website says they are venturing into the Black Hills Forest to find out what happened to James' sister "who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch"
So unless James is the brother of Elly Kedward herself I think it's safe to assume that Heather was his sister.

As soon as I heard it was her brother, I immediately thought of the Cade Merrill character from BW Files.

Those books aren't canon so I doubt a new movie would have followed in that direction.
Besides, that character was Heather's cousin.
