For a decade, I still can't understand if it was Josh screaming or if it was the Blair Witch. Does anybody know who was screaming in the end? was it Josh being tortured by the witch or was it the witch taunting them?

I think it was the witch, as the twig bundle had teeth maybe she did a spell and needed the teeth to talk like him, I remember in one of the stories in The Blair Witch Chronicles comic, a similar thing happening but with eyes and seeing what the other person was seeing.

That was always my take on it. The first night they heard him was when he was being tortured and his teeth yanked out and all that. The voice they heard the final night was in fact the witch pretending to be him.
One thing I do find interesting is that early on (the final night), Mike says, "That can't be him!" How would he know? Maybe in a deleted scene, Heather told him about the bloody bundle she found outside the tent, but the way the film went out, she was hiding from him the fact that she knew he was dead.

I don't know if they instructed him to do it this way, but the screams on the last night seemed markedly different from that of the night before.
Some of them are high pitched in a strange way - almost banshee-like. It's like the voice of Josh with all the mannerisms of the Witch.

Ive never noticed that, but I'll always take another reason to rewatch. I know they just used a boombox w/ a recording of Josh screaming to produce the sound, but within the film I like the ambiguity of whether or not it was him...like, voluntarily doing it. |

In my opinion, Josh was being tortured first and then the witch imitated his screams to lure Heather and Mike into the house. I don't know if she needed to bring them there or just wanted to mess with them, seeing how the crew was aware of the Rustin Parr backstory...

I think when they were in the house looking for Josh and you hear him saying things like "help me" and "guys please" it was the witch. Remember how they'd hear Josh upstairs then it changed to downstairs but he didn't sound like he was desperate, more like he was talking normally. I know it was Josh the actor but myth wise I think it was the witch trying to mess with them and eventually lure then downstairs to be killed. If Josh was really there and knew Heather and Mike were there he would have probably screamed his head off trying to let them know where he was so he could be rescued. He would have been like "guys help me I'm in the attic" or something.
