It just occurred to me how alike these two films are. Both have families living in a haunted place where murders happened. Both have dads that go bonkers. Both have psychics and bloody setpieces (bleeding walls and a blood elevator). Both have a Native American source for their curse (massacre site and burial ground). Both have people fleeing at the end.
That's where things end, however. One is a horror classic. One is a steaming pile of hot poo. AH had a lot of promise, but failed to deliver. TS did it right (except for that one scene near the end when Wendy runs into the blue room and sees all the cobwebbed skeletons. That scene should have been cut. Too cheesy.).

Yeah, Im gonna go with The Shining too. I did love Amityville but its pretty overrated and the premise is not as well executed as Shining. The Shining remains one of my favourite movies, although I am peeved off that it really wasn't true to the novel and downplayed the whole supernatural theme. Still, forgetting the novel, the movie is one of the best horror movies ever made.

I agree that they both have many similarities. I also noticed this when watching them. I also compared them both to a lesser known movie, but still a great movie, "Night of Dark Shadows." I like both The Shining and Amityville Horror so I can't pick one favorite over the other.

I saw it when I was a kid thought (we had HBO lol) and I saw it again as a teen and it was scary at the time. Bottom line for me : Amityville just doesn't hold up the way The Shinning does.
