How does one start and complete such a brilliant and layered history for a movie like TBWP?
Great job,
Thanks, Vickie ;D

With sheer brilliance...
Just kidding. Rather, just lying.
We took our time -- I think that's the best way to look at it. Being in no particular rush back then gave us the edge of really thinking and tweaking everything.
Before I came onboard, Dan, Ed, and Gregg had already worked out the rough draft of the mythology. They asked me to flesh it out basically, and that's what I did. The internet wasn't yet what it is now, so I actually had to go to a LIBRARY and bury myself in weird texts. Loads-o-fun. I also am an avid reader of "Fortean Times" magazine, and I used it a bunch for reference.
The layered-ness of it all comes from the mock-controversial natrue of every BW story ever told -- for every person who says that something happened, there are twelve ready to deny it.
I think another contributing factor was the fact that we had NO WAY TO KNOW that this would really get under people's skin. We had no corporate structure telling us what focus groups said, we had nothing but ourselves and what creeped us out.
People ask if we had any idea what we were about to make, and the answer is always no. If we'd had any idea that this would be released nationwide in theaters, we probably would have played it more safe, and it wouldn't have been what it was.
Ironic, because in this business (as we had very little way of knowing back then) "playing it safe" is everyone's main preoccupation. It catches on and infects your work. We were lucky in a way that we didn't have that in the backs of our heads as we worked.
