When we first see all the piles of rocks, Heather says "what was that story from the Bible she was telling us? Fuck I wasn't listening to her..."
Do you think there is an actual correlation here to some real story or quote?

This is an old, ignored thread, but why not. Lying a stone or stones on top of a grave is a thing in the old testament / Jewish tradition. In the film, Esau from the bible is mentioned by Heather, but this is likely the story she meant:
The italicized and underlined at the end could point to the fact the students went beyond the point of no return and sealing their doom.

Oh cool! I did not know about this passage. Makes sense now... so apparently when he kicked it or knocked it over and they went past the pile of rocks, they violated this "covenant" between the witch and maybe the old townsfolk of Blair in which it was established that if they went no further into the woods past those pile of stones, she likewise would not pass them and go near them? Am I interpreting this correctly? Cuz after he knocked them over and "disrespected" them in Heathers eyes she kissed the rocks and repiled them and said a little prayer basically, trying to say sorry for her companions carelessness and disrespect and said "You can never be too careful." Hmmm...

The evil in the woods never made any type of pact with the Blair townsfolk.

Do you think there is an actual correlation here to some real story or quote? I believe in Heather's mind, yes. And the underlined text provided above from Genesis is most likely what she was thinking of. .. Somewhere on the original Blair Witch Project website it lists two different Bible passages that are not what's been listed above. It poses the question: "Could one of these be what Heather was thinking of?" ... But I don't believe so, because neither seemed to have a direct correlation to stone piles.

I was reading Heather’s journal and on p24 she mentions Mary’s story, saying ‘something about what it means when the Lord hands you a pile of rocks’. That doesn’t actually sound like the possible verses above, unless she interpreted passing rocks to mean handing them over...

I don't remember Mary's apecific comments because it's been a minute since I've seen it, but I'd always assumed it was some reference to the Book of Job--that mentions rocks and ashes a lot. What specifically did Mary say? Anybody?

What specifically did Mary say? Anybody? You don’t actually hear Mary talk about it. Heather just mentions it when they find the rocks in the woods. And then writes about in her journal (which is in The Blair Witch Project: A Dossier), as quoted above.

Full quote from Heather’s journal: ‘And what was Mary Brown’s story from the bible about a pile of rocks? I cannot FUCKING remember what she said about that because I was freaking out about trying to keep the interview to two mags. Maybe we at least have it on the DAT. Something about what it means when the Lord hands you a pile of rocks. I really wish I could remember. I need any insight I can get at this point’.
