The Owl, from what I have seen, is somehow connected to the Blair Witch profusely.
In The Blair Witch Project, Josh claims to have heard an owl and a cackling in the night. This unfortunately means nothing.
In Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Kim Diamond sees an owl looking at her in a tree as well as the owl smashing through a window.
In the original Blair Witch 2 script, the owl is seen multiple times. here are pieces which feature the owl...
and there's Domini, still lying on her back, staring up, cooing:
DOMINI Oooh. Oooh.
NICK Ah, Domini?
DOMINI What?
NICK You planning on sleeping out there?
DOMINI Not planning on sleeping at all.
She points up into the big oak in the middle of the foundation.
DOMINI Oooh. Oooh.
The call comes back to her from the tree: "oooh-oooh."
Nick sees perched high up on one of the branches: A GREAT HORNED OWL. It's staring down at them.
DOMINI I figure I lie here long enough, maybe he'll swoop down and carry me off in his talons.
Nick rolls his eyes and goes back into his tent.
COTTER AND HEATHER
are also watching this from their tent.
HEATHER We should be so lucky.
COTTER Butt-ugly owl.
They duck back into the tent.
The Owl keeps watching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
EXT. 41ST STREET - NIGHT
Cotter wearily unlocks the door to his Van.
He looks all around him--finally up:
There's an Owl staring down at him from a tree in Druid Hill Park across the street. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What does the owl symbolize? The Blair Witch Possibly.
How? The Owl in some places are usually connected to evil and the occult. Because Elly was a witch, the owl was part of it all. When Elly died in the winter of 1785, in the original script, she was hung by two boys named Jonathan Edmund and James Kurth, the owl became a part of her. It was her eyes, finding all and marking them for death as well as watching over.
but remember that this is only a theory of mine. all may not be true. It's only a theory of mine

to be honest, the owl means death in some cultures but in this case, the owl is the animal form of Elly Kedward. Elly, even though she is a ghost, can become an animal and watch over the victims. In the second film, the owl is seen watching the main characters, the owl was possibly there when they killed the other tour group, the owl was there when they killed the two other persons in the film. The Blair Witch has power over those she watches. And she will never stop.

Elly may come as a winged messenger (owl), bringing gifts of wisdom, insight, and discernment (the ability to judge well), if we are wise enough to understand. Since ancient times, the owl has been associated with wisdom, deep learning, and Underworld deities ... Erica does pray to Persephone; Queen of the Underworld ... Magickal Attributes of the Owl: Silent and swift movement; keen insight into obscure events; unmasking those who would deceive you. In meditation often a guide to and from the Underworld. Wisdom, magick, darkness, freedom. Dreams, shape-shifting. Clairvoyance, astral projection. A messenger of hidden truth, secrets, and omens. Moon magick. Wisdom to make positive changes. The Owl has a strong association with wisdom and with transformation. They possess the keys to unlock many kinds of wisdom, particularly those which apply to human isolation and fear of being alone. Owls are plain creepy. Except the one in this movie. Which looked like a furry football. The owl in Twin Peaks was a vessel for the Lodge Spirits. All-seeing. Watching everything. Not too great a leap to say that Elly was using the owl. Or she might have taken on its form.

Wasn't an owl mentioned in the deleted Cry Baby Brdige scene from the first movie as well?

They're also mighty tasty slow-roasted. Or eaten raw. Kimmie Style!

The owl simply represents the evil in their presence. It lives, dies, lives again, then dies again.
The owls actual chronological appearances are:
In the tree watching Kim.
Tristen dancing with its corpse at the end of the night ritual.
In a tree watching Tristen (outside her bedroom window)
Flying through the living room window and then dying on the floor.
Its corpse being consumed by Kim.

I think the owl was used in the film to make the movie gooder, and it is usually not a nice frendly safe bird to have around, so it makes the movie seem like it's maybe scary or gives a bad feeling when you look at it.

Not to be the turd in the punchbowl, the owl (and the brief nudity) are a result of a test screening, which was the poster child of patheticism.
When Artisan was reviewing the final cut, at the very last minute (I believe it was as late as August or even possibly September), they decided the film needed more of the "Hollywood formula" to assuage the thirst of the theater goer.
"Not good enough, 'needs some blood."
"Yea, and some tits."
At the last minute they tossed in the owl scene, as well as the tits.
Seriously.

I can't even imagine if Kim had done a full frontal back then. People wouldn't be bashing Book of Shadows to this very day like they always have.

I kinda figured the eating of the owl scene was random filler (it just never sat right with me, even if Jeff was really losing it by then or the evil was just messing with everyone in different ways) and it felt like a no-brainer that the nudity was added at the demand of the studio, but every appearance of the owl was from test screening? It seemed like it had some sort of unknown stigma to it in the first shot with Kim noticing it.

This is the big nudity? I really wish it had been Kim. And in full color higher quality, not black and white with low quality. And if not Kim, then Tristen would have done just fine as well. ... heart ...stop pumping so fast.. calm thyself. * okay ... I guess this really isn't black and white either, but it almost looks like it is, damn. .. "Can you make it so we can see her boobs?" "Sure can". "How did you do this?" "I took the image and I blew it up". .. Maybe Kim taking a bite of the owl was thrown in for shock value, but the owl shows up in four different places besides that. The owl flying through the window stupidly may have been just so that Kim could take a bite out of it later. But even before that, it's already outside Tristen's window looking in at her. It was meant to represent the forest evil, but it wasn't meant to fly through the window and then be eaten by Kim. Here's what I think happened .. Berlinger: "I really like the owl watching over them all the time. Spooky". Artisan: "okay, fine. But we're going to have it fly through the window and then have Kim take a bite out of it too!" As for the owl being in the night ritual footage with Tristen dancing with it, I look at that as representing dancing with evil. She was more consumed by it than anyone else. Don't forget how she behaved at Jeff's place the entire time she was there until she was hung ( or had herself hung, whatever )

It's un tellably cool we have inside info on the going on in the making of the movie, they put it in at the last moment, "the movie needs tits" holy smokes. It's cool to have the extra info.

Story-wise, they were always meant to find Erica twirling around a tree on their footage, but I guess it was originally only going to be a headshot without breastesses. .. And here's another thing that I always absolutely hated. The stupid-ass Stephen/Erica make-out scene. It had to have been shoe-horned in by Artisan to make things sexier and bloodier. I actually still feel a bit of anger whenever I think of it. .. Oh and don't even get me started on Stephen running to comfort and tell Tristen she's not going crazy directly after she left him begging for her help off the collapsed bridge. Those two scenes work best in opposite order. I almost feel like it was an editing mistake.

The make out scene would have been more wacked for viewers if it had been Stephen making out with ham lady all the while not knowing why he was doing it. Or a good time for the owl smashing through a window would have been AT the grocery store on the beer run Kim did, right before Kim "buys" beer from Peggy "the bitch at the counter". It smashes through the window and kin is like "HOLY SH#T!" but then two seconds after it's like it never happened, and the window isn't broken and there's no broken glass anywhere and no owl on the floor, like it was some sort of weird hallucination. Then after that Kim seems to have a "MAJOR MALFUNCTION" with Peggy being nasty, and has her fight then "buys" the beer and leaves. What do you guys think?

There's no rhyme or reason for an owl window smash, so I prefer it to not happen at all.
