Hey Ben, what do you think about the "Blair Witch Sequel"? What do you like at "BoS", what not? Thanks, Marcel

I try to be diplomatic about such things... Feel free to read what you will between the lines here:
Let me first say that I WANTED the sequel to succeed. I didn't much care for the script when I read it, but it was a VERY ROUGH draft and was rushed into production.
I think the film is pretty standard horror fare. I've seen way better, I've seen way worse.
Knowing what I know of what we were planning for a sequel, I think ours would have been WAY better, but the realities of production (the fact that they had just nine months to write, produce, and release the film) would have hobbled anyone.
I also saw an early cut of the film, and I was afraid that it wouldn't work at all. When I saw the film in the theater on opening weekend, I went with my girlfriend and a friend who didn't really give a toss about BWP or anything. We all kind of watched it and thought "okay, that was a film, big deal."
There were like 30 people in that theater, which was my first indication that it wasn't going to be a financial hit.
There's no way that they could have recreated what we did (incubating a new idea for several years), so they tried to pump something out. Joe Berlinger thought he had an original take on the sequel idea, and (although I don't agree with the idea), he might have proved himself right if he had enough time to do it.
Is that diplomatic enough?

I think that the sequel is fine as long as you separate it from the myth. It is one guys interpretation of the story... much like the fanfics we had on TBWFC site.
as it goes I think JB did a pretty good job given the time restrictions that Ben has mentioned. I was scared shittless when Eileen Treacle shivvered backwards in the old hospital. I liked that JB kept Jeff's background ambiguous and the inclusion of his shouting 'enough' was sufficient to link him with Kyle Brody in White Enamel.
I just wish there had been less guts and gore and thumping manson choons.

Take a listen to the commentary. Jow wasnt too hot aboutt he blood and gore since he wanted to achieve an aimbguity about it. He wasnt too thrilled about the optical with Eileen treacle as well. He preferred going for the mind game such as the table sex secene with Stephen and Erica. That was a darned good fakeout for the end of that scene.
Overall, I liked BOS very much. It has some flaws, sure, but I think its a logical take on the tale, and is also interesting in watching the psychological unravel of the characters. Like BW1, it is a character based story, working off their personalities and interactions to the given situations.
